Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog and e-portfolio.
A little background information about me:
I was raised on small dairy farm in Central Pennsylvania where I grew up with a passion for the dairy industry. During my youth, I competed in 4-H, FFA events, and Junior Holstein. In 2005, I started my undergraduate education at Penn State University, where I earned a BS in Animal Sciences. During my time at Penn State, I was lucky to compete in multiple contests with great success including the top team at the 2007 Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Madison, WI and the top team at 2009 ADSA-SAD for quiz bowl.
After my undergrad, I worked in industry for 5 years, mostly as a herdsman. Some of my highlights from this time period include working at Arethusa Farm in Connecticut and at Gen-Com LLC in Quebec. Both farms are premier show herds and it was quite a privilege to work with high quality cattle. This experience taught me what I call the ‘Gold Standard’ of cattle care. I plan to take the experiences I gained from my industry experience and apply to my PhD today.
I am currently working towards my PhD in Animal Science at Virginia Tech under the advisement of Dr. Christina Petersson-Wolfe. My focus is on animal behavior and well-being. Check out our research!
My future career goals and aspirations are to become a faculty member with a research and extension appointment. I enjoy working with dairy farmers resolving management problems, and researching new ideas on ways to improve dairy cattle well-being.
